governor chris christie, michael bloomberg coming out and endorsing the president. is this a solid position? >> any other year, this wouldn't have been considered any position that he would want to be in as an incumbent president. but, well, you have to factor in the weakness of the opposition and also the history nature of this recovery which makes it different in speed from ones before it. i think what today is not a big news story and that's good news for the president. this was sort of the last chance that some external event could really trip him up. obviously, nobody knows what could occur over the last four days. but republicans were hoping this would be some last-minute thing that voters would be taking into the voting booth with them. when it appears the numbers would be delayed because of the storm, they went and said it was a conspiracy. the numbers are out and they're not that bad relative to what they could about. this is overall good news for the president as you pointed out, major foul-ups could come from any of these places. but, jared, as susan pointed out, is this already

jersey governor chris christie made some very, very dire assessments to what he expects the damage will be in atlantic city and on the jersey shore. take a listen. >> i think what we'll find, unfortunately, when we get to the jersey shore today is total devastation. and that's the real concern. because not only is it people's homes and private property but also you have the tourism industry in new jersey which is one of our biggest industries. we're going to have to work hard to make sure we're ready for next summer at the jersey shore. >> reporter: now, of course, the casino industry the biggest industry in atlantic city. those 12 flagship casinos have been closed throughout the week. they cost about $50 million in lost revenue during irene and the expectation was that because the season was a little bit softer, maybe it wouldn't be as bad. now it's clear that even though as christie called it the damage is incalculable right now it will be much steeper than irene. hopefully we'll get more from christie later. a few other buzz words, search and rescue teams went out at 5:30 trying

jersey shore among the hardest hit where the governors of new jersey, chris christie, said that the damage there is absolutely unthinkable and the pictures from above are mindboggling. even as the storm moved north it did not spare maryland, delaware, washington, dc, or northern virginia. hundreds of thousands lost power. roads and bridges are closed. shore lines are battered. the storm then slammed into the big city and surrounding areas, a record surge of seawater coming in to the lower part of manhattan flooding the subways, the tunnels, the roads, everything below 34th street in new york city is without power, the bridges are back open, the subways may not be open for four or five days, the trains that go to new jersey, no one knows they were flooded up to the ceiling in some cases. the trains that lead to long island, no clouds. the city is paralyzed. in connecticut the storm damaged homes and millions of trees are down. some homes washed off their foundation. it caused damage and power outage in pennsylvania, in massachusetts, in new hampshire and in vermont. in all,

of incumbency. that is precisely the way he has looked, with the help of his new best friend chris christie. i guess bill clinton will have to step aside. he was the president's new best friend. now it's chris christie. with that bipartisan blessing, the president looks good. for mitt romney, he was pushed off the stage. this storm was a kind of circuit breaker for about three days. momentum, at least according to the romney camp, had been building up for romney. you lose that. politics is not just about the national voter choice. there's a big dial-up emotions included in this. i think the air went out of the balloon to a certain degree for romney during those three days. does he have time to regen? of course. we are back in the campaign today and will be back at a fever pitch by monday night. look at where the candidates are going. that tells you where the race is really close. they are trying to get that extra point to win. you can do it if you finish up a campaign in a particular states, if the rally is good and everything clicks and you dominate the press in the final 12 hours to 15 hours

was incredibly desire and last night governor chris christie made harsh words about those who chose not to evacuate. and saying the mayor had gone rogue and heeded people that can't need to heed. christie saying if you were stranded in atlantic city, you had to wait until daylight to be rescued. they just could not send emergency responders. and you can tell by the fact that even two dozen people who were at shelters had to be evacuated from the shelters because the flooding and the situation there got so bad. now of course overall, we'll have to wait until daylight for the damage lear to be assessed. we have high tide in just a few more hours which could possess more flooding risk, but people think the swors ovworst is over. >> we're glad you're still safe there. 8:37 is high tide and that is expected to bring more concerns about flooding. we'll check back in with her later this morning. the new york stock exchange and nasdaq will both be completely shut down for a second day in a row. the bond markets are closed today, as well. futures are continuing to trade. those prices will be
